The next generation of water scientists

GEOGLOWS grows through the students and researchers who carry it into new basins and use cases. BYU's Hydroinformatics Lab and the David M. Kennedy Center pair coursework with real deployments, sending student teams to work alongside SERVIR regional hubs and national services.

  • Capstone in the fieldSince 2011, BYU civil-engineering students have completed Kennedy Center capstone projects abroad, building and deploying hydro-informatics systems with local communities, more than 150 students to date.
  • Working with SERVIR hubsStudent teams travel to SERVIR regional hubs, from Nairobi and Accra to Kathmandu and Quito, to build RFS-based forecast bulletins and stakeholder assessments, then hand them to local partners.
  • Open, published researchMethods and results are documented in the peer-reviewed literature and shared openly, so each cohort builds on the work of the last.

The funding case for closing the forecast gap

Floods and droughts cost billions of dollars and displace millions of people every year, and the hardest-hit regions are usually the ones with the least capacity to forecast, warn, or prepare. Closing that gap means connecting data and models that already exist to the people who need them.
